How to Draw a Cartoon Squirrel – let’s get Initiated!

Step 1

We will create many of your chipmunk cartoons in this first step of the guide! It may seem overwhelming, but we’ll take it slow to ensure you don’t miss out. In the later steps of the guide, you’ll see that the squirrel’s head is separated into two sections, and now we’ll draw the bottom section. This will be drawn with curved lines with pointed tips to make this section look hairier. Next, we will draw the squirrel’s arm, which will be long and thin with rounded fingers at the end. This hand will hold something later, but we’ll get to that soon! Then the body will also be quite rounded, and the legs and chest will have some pointy sections to make them furry. Add some big, flat feet to the base, and then we can continue!

Step 2

You drew the bottom half of the face in the previous step of our guide on how to draw a cartoon squirrel, and in this one, we’ll draw the top half. You can start by drawing two large, oval-shaped eyes connected. These will have curved lines above the eyebrows. Next, we’ll add two rounded ears on top of the outline of the head. Finally, finish by drawing a small angular nose at the bottom of the head.

Step 3

Squirrels love acorns; everyone knows it, so we’re giving you a squirrel. The acorn has a rounded cap on top, and a small, rounded stem can be added. The lower half will be drawn using another curved line that ends in a pointed tip. Next, we will add the squirrel tail. A squirrel’s tail is usually huge compared to the rest of its body, and that’s true here! As with other parts of the squirrel, the tail will be drawn with a combination of curved and rounded lines with pointed tips to make it look friendly and furry.

Step 4

Now it’s time to add some more minor details to the tail and acorn of this cartoon squirrel drawing. We’ll start with the acorn. For the acorn cap, we’ll draw many smaller curved lines connecting to give it a scaled look. Then, we’ll add a series of simple, slightly curved lines for the bottom half to give it some texture. To finish this step, we will draw a section above the tail. Then you’ll be keen for some last details and parts in the next step of the guide!

Step 5

This step of our guide on drawing a cartoon squirrel will focus on adding some final details and elements to prepare you for the final step of the guide. These final details will focus primarily on the squirrel’s face, and we’ll start simple. For the eyes, we’ll add a large dot inside each one for the pupils. Then we add curved lines down the nose for the open, smiling mouth. As a final detail, we added the common square buck teeth in squirrels. Once you’ve added these final details, you can finish up with some details of your own! You could draw a background or add another squirrel friend to get some ideas, but what do you come up with?

Step 6

Now you’re ready to finish this image with some colors, and this is where you can take control and show what you can do! We will show you the colors we would choose for this image in our example, but they are a suggestion. You can choose brown and beige colors similar to what we use, but you should feel free to choose any other color you prefer. This is also an excellent opportunity to play with your favorite art tools and media, so we hope you have a lot of fun finishing it!
